Below you will find answers to some of the more common questions regarding the Dukan Diet.

Is the Dukan Diet okay while breastfeeding?

While nursing mothers can follow the Dukan Diet, there is a version specifically for nursing mothers.  Rapid weight loss can affect a nursing mother's milk by releasing toxins into the bloodstream that get into the milk.  It is recommended that mothers who are breastfeeding their children don't lose more than one pound per week. Many people search online for a Dukan Diet review when considering the plan.

The nursing mother's version of the Dukan Diet is similar to the consolidation phase of the diet.  It allows the mother to have an extra serving of fruit and they can add 1% milk to their diet.  They don't need to follow the one all-protein day recommendation either.

Does the Dukan Diet work for men?

The Dukan Diet can be followed by either men or women and, since protein helps build lean muscle, it is actually a great diet for men.  Adding muscle to your body will help increase your weight loss abilities as lean muscle burns fat 24 hours a day, no matter what you are doing.  Even while you're sleeping, your body will burn fat when you add on lean muscle.  Guys who like meat will love the attack phase of the diet because they can eat as much of the protein-rich meat as they like so they won't feel hungry on this diet.

Can you have peanut butter on the Dukan Diet?

While peanut butter is a protein-rich food, it also contains a lot of fat and is high in carbohydrates.  During the attack and cruise phase of the Dukan Diet, peanut butter would not be allowed because of its fat and carb content.  However, it is allowed during the consolidation and stabilization phases of the diet. During the consolidation phase, peanut butter would only be allowed in one of the two allowed celebratory meals.  It could be eaten during any day in the stabilization phase, except on the all-protein day.  With its high fat and carb content, it should be eaten sparingly.

Is cheese okay to have on the Dukan Diet?

Cheeses are gradually added back into the diet during the consolidation phase of the Dukan Diet, but dieters should be aware the fat free cheeses can be eaten during the first two phases of the diet as tolerated foods.  There are a number of fat-free cheeses that can be eaten during the first two phases, such as fat-free or low-fat cottage cheese, fat-free ricotta cheese and fat-free cream cheese.  However, Dr. Dukan doesn't recommend that fat-free cheeses are eaten because of their taste and real cheeses, such as hard cheeses, are not allowed until the third phase of the diet.

Can you drink almond milk on the Dukan Diet?

As dairy milk has protein in it, it is allowed while on the Duken Diet.  However, while there is no limit on the amount of milk that can be consumed during the diet, almond milk is not allowed as a substitute for dairy milk.  The diet recommends the dieters drink skim milk on the diet and the nutritional content for skim milk is much different from that of almond milk.  Skim milk has about eight grams of protein per serving, which is one cup.  Almond contains only one gram of protein and it is higher in fat content than dairy milk.

Is vodka allowed on the Dukan Diet?

It is recommended that any alcoholic beverages be avoided while on the weight loss phases of the diet, which includes the attack and cruise phases.  However, the diet can be adapted to allow for one drink, red wine is suggested, during these phases as long as the dieter sticks to that limit and indulges in more physical activity the next day to counterbalance its affect.  Even though alcohol consumption should be avoided during the weight loss phases, one alcoholic drink is doable as long as the dieter adheres closely to the diet and increases their exercise to burn off the added calories.

When does tiredness go away on the Dukan Diet?

During the first phase of the diet, dieters may feel more tired and get exhausted much easier than they did before they started the Dukan Diet.  However, this reaction is normal because the body is adjusting to the change in the types of food being eaten.  It usually takes dieters about three days to notice that the tiredness has gone away and to start feeling more energetic.  The dieters' cravings for foods laden with carbohydrates should start to go away as well.  While in the first few days of the diet, it is recommended that dieters don't do extensive exercising.

Why do you have a headache on the Dukan diet?

The Dukan Diet is not without its side effects.  Some people who are on this diet program will experience symptoms such as nausea, fever or headaches, but they are not side effects of the diet itself.  Rather the headaches are caused by the withdrawal of carbohydrates from the diet.

The headaches caused by this withdrawal are limited to the first phase of the diet and, as the body adjusts to the diet, the headaches will go away.  It should only take a few days for symptoms to dissipate and you start to feel better and have more energy.

There are many dieters that have used the Dukan Diet to lose 10, 20 or up to 100 pounds or more by following this plan.  Dieters have written rave reviews regarding their success on the Dukan Diet. They can be normal everyday people and celebrities alike.  Both male and female dieters have found success on this program, including Emily S. and Matthew S., not related, who both lost 85 pounds on the diet.

Kate Middleton went on the diet when she wanted to trim down for her royal wedding to Prince William.  Movie star and international singing star Jennifer Lopez and fashion supermodel Gisele Bundchen both used the Dukan Diet when they wanted to drop some of their excess weight.

Some of the benefits that users of the Dukan Diet reported include:

Quick Weight Loss - Losing weight has many benefits for the body.  It decreases your chance of getting obesity related diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and several other medical problems associated with being overweight.

Easy to Follow Program - The diet lists the foods that are allowed on the diet and the phases in which they can be eaten.  Dieters don't have to count calories or message out food portions in order to accurately follow the diet and lose weight.

More Energy - As dieters drop their excess weight, many of them have reported that they have more energy when they are on the diet.  Energy levels do increase, as weight is lost because the excess weight is no longer holding you down.  The high-protein foods on the attack phase of the diet help provide more energy as well.  Protein is used by the body as fuel and high-protein foods that lack fat and carbohydrates are less likely to be stored in the body as fat because the body is burning through them quickly.

A Great Diet for Meat Lovers - All too often dieters who love meat fail at diets that call for eating lots of vegetables and fruits because they miss their beef, pork or chicken.  On the Dukan Diet, meat can be eaten because it is high in protein and, during the first phase of the program, dieters can indulge in almost unlimited quantities of protein.

Rob V., who lost 50 pounds on the Dukan Diet, says he is able to enjoy doing things again because of his weight loss.  The weight is no longer holding him back and he is enjoying his life again.  Even a dieter who has lost 20 lbs., Jacqueline M., feels like she has dropped 10 years off of her life.

Not only will you look better as you drop unwanted weight, but you will feel better as well.  Your body will have more energy to move about and your health will dramatically improve with even the smallest weight loss.

As your physical health improves and your body starts to look slimmer, your mental health, your stress levels and depression will show signs of improvement as well.

What are the Phases of the Dukan Diet?

2/19/2014

There are four easy to follow phases, or ground pillars, to the Dukan Diet.  These phases are known as:

  • Attack
  • Cruise
  • Consolidation
  • Stabilization

Here is a closer look at the phases of the Dukan Diet and how they work.

The attack phase of the diet is the most restrictive part of this program.  Dieters are given a list of 68-protein rich foods that they can choose from to eat.  The purpose of this phase is the increase the body's metabolism so dieters can quickly lose weight.  Most people lose between four to six and a half pounds during the first two to seven days during this part of the diet.

Dieters can indulge in as much of the protein rich foods as they wish during the attack phase.  Oat bran is also introduced into the diet during the attack phase to help dieters to keep from being constipated while they indulge in the high-protein foods.  Dieters should also be mindful about keep hydrated while their dieting and they need to consume about 1 and a half liters of water per day.

The cruise phase will help dieters continue to lose weight in order to reach their goal, but more foods are introduced into the diet to make it more balanced.  There are 32 vegetables that are added to the diet, which increases the food choices to 100 different foods.  The diet will alternate between days where only protein is consumed to days that include both proteins and vegetables.

To achieve their weight loss goals, this phase of the diet is based on a three-day schedule for each additional pound a dieter wishes to lose.  This phase is also calculated at a weight loss of about two pounds per week, but that amount will vary from dieter to dieter.

The next phase of the Dukan Diet is the consolidation phase.  Different types of foods are reintroduced into the dieters' meal plan until they resume a normal, everyday diet.  The foods that are added back into the diet include starches, fruits, bread and cheeses.  The reintroduced foods have limited quantities.  Dieters can also indulge in two celebration meals per week.

The last phase of the diet is the stabilization phase.  During this ground pillar, dieters must follow three dietary rules in order to maintain their success.

  • They have to eat three tablespoons of oat bran everyday.
  • They need to walk for 20 minutes a day.
  • Dieters have an all protein day on Thursday.

There is no shortage of diet plans available to those who want or need to lose weight.  The latest trendy diet is known as the Dukan Diet, which was named after its creator, French doctor Pierre Dukan.  It has received rave reviews from all over the world. While he created the diet over 30 years ago, it didn't become popular until his book, called "The Dukan Diet," was published in 2000.  Since its first publication, it has been translated into 32 languages and the book was released in the United States in 2011.

The Dukan Diet, also known as the "Princess Diet," helps people lose weight by eating foods that are low-fat and have few carbohydrates.  There is a list of 100 foods that are allowed on the diet.  The diet consists of four phases, also called ground pillars.  The first phase, called the "attack" phase, allows dieters to lose up to six and a half pounds during the first week by revving up the body's metabolism.  During this phase, dieters have a choice of 68-protein rich foods for their meals.
